Back to School, Post-COVID

In September of every year, thousands of young people across the country return to school. Whether you’re going to University, starting High School, or continuing your education journey in a fond place - this time of year can bring to surface a lot of emotions for all.

This year is no exception. Over the next few weeks, young people will be transitioning back to full-time education for the first time in almost 6 months. After what has been an extraordinarily uncertain period in their lives, this could bring relief to young people - they can finally see some sort of ‘normal’ again. But, this year for the first time, young people will be returning to a new version of school, a new kind of structure and a new normal of everyday life.

As a result of this, you could be feeling a copious range of emotions. Some may be feeling excited; some may be feeling nervous or happy or apprehensive; and some may be wishing they valued their time off a little more!

At Newport Youth Council, we want to reassure you that you are entitled to feel all these emotions. It is completely normal to be concerned or unsure or even super excited about going back to school - despite what some of your friends might say!

However, at Newport Youth Council, we also acknowledge that this could be a confusing time. So, because of this, our Communications Team has developed ‘10 Top Tips’ for returning to school!

1.      In the days leading up to returning to school, try and develop a regular sleeping pattern. This will make waking up bright and early for school (something a lot of us aren't used to anymore) much easier and make the start of your day more positive!

2.    Pack and check your school bag the night before. This way, you’ll be reassured you have everything you need to face the day and won’t be in a rush to get organised on your first morning back at school.

3.     Have breakfast! This may seem simple and unimportant, however by having breakfast you’ll feel more energised and ready to take on the day ahead of you.

4.     Bring a reusable water bottle. Not only is this better for the environment than a single use plastic bottle, staying hydrated is key and will help you feel refreshed throughout the day.

5.     Take a healthy snack. This will help you feel energised all day but, try to resist eating it during lessons!

6.     Be as polite and friendly to your new teachers as you would be to your well-known ones.

7.     If you’re starting a new school, don’t be afraid to ask for help! It’s always okay to ask for help when you need it - you’re not the only one experiencing change.

8.     Stay positive! The first day back can be a challenge, however, try to stay as positive as you can and take one day at a time.

9.     Ask your friends how they feel about going back to school. This is a nerve-racking time for everyone and talking about how you feel can help you and those around you.

10.  Check the advice from your school the night before you start. Information is being updated constantly during this strange time and each school may be slightly different, so, check the advice from your own school to ensure you feel ready and comfortable to face the new environment.

From all of us at Newport Youth Council, good luck with starting the new academic year! This new normal may seem scary but, remember that everyone is going through change and it’s okay to not feel completely comfortable. We’re all in this together!
